Why this app exists
Some Samsung phones do not offer Romanian in the default Samsung text-to-speech engine. This app fills that gap with a Romanian-only voice based on the Piper voice family.
The bundled voice repository is maintained by eduardem on Hugging Face.
Install on your phone
- Download the APK from the current release.
- Install it on your Android phone.
- Open the app once so Android can register the engine.
- Open Settings and find Text-to-Speech output.
- Select Romanian TTS - Lili as the preferred engine.
If the engine does not appear immediately, reopen the app once and check the TTS settings again.
Use it with TalkBack
TalkBack usually reads through the phone's active text-to-speech engine. After you switch the preferred engine to Romanian TTS - Lili, TalkBack can use this voice for Romanian output.
- Install the app and set it as the preferred TTS engine.
- Turn on TalkBack if it is not already enabled.
- Open TalkBack settings and look for speech or text-to-speech options if your device exposes them.
- If TalkBack does not show a separate voice selector, keep the system preferred engine set to Romanian TTS - Lili.
- Test by moving focus around the interface or using Android's read-aloud features in Romanian.
Menu names vary by Android version and phone brand, but the key step is setting the system TTS engine to Romanian TTS - Lili.
Important notes
- This app is built specifically for Romanian speech output.
- It is not a multi-language TTS package.
- After installation, speech runs locally on the device.
- The app is especially useful on phones where Romanian is missing from the default TTS engine.
